Father's speech at son's wedding

My mother told me that I have to marry and have children while young. And I took her advice, I married while I still was in university and had Vlad before graduation. It was a challenging time, it was a happy time and it was a time of learning - about kids, family and other “issues” like these ones.
And I can tell you now that when I was young, I was very poor. But now, after many years of hard work and dedication, I am no longer young.
I saw Vlad growing from a little bundle of joy, to a guy taller than me, a guy that I cannot wrestle any more and discipline like I used to. I saw him in kindergarten, when he told me I want to kill him for trying to teach him how to sky. I saw him in high school, when he realized he is smarter than his parents and did all kinds of things teenagers do that make parents go crazy. I saw him graduating not once, but twice, from university and coming around to the “boring” parent teachings of the old. He’s a nice guy, as we say in Romania, with his share of lacking things. (E băiat bun, dar cu lipsuri). And we are proud to be his parents, my wife and I.
As parents, we were growing impatient about his love life. That was a part of his life he kept somehow secret from us. He only told that, when the time is right and he really thinks that we should know, he will come with girl in tow to present her to us.
At long last, he brought home a girl from Ukraine, of all places. When my wife saw her, she said she looks like a fairy. The visits home with Maryna became regular, and we realized something serious is going on. Maryna brings some kind of peace in Vlad, she’s very calming, they look good together. Thank you Maryna for loving Vlad, for the joy that you bring in this relationship.
This is a journey that is just beginning and I wish both of you a safe, happy, prosperous and understanding voyage on this path of life.
The other day I was looking at some media and came across an interview. The reporter asked a guy that looked like me what's the secret of his long marriage. “Well”, the guy said, “the first day she’s right, the second day she’s right again and the third day I’m wrong!”
I wish both Vlad and Maryna to take every challenge that comes their way together, hand in hand, with love and understanding.
And now to all of you who came to this beautiful wedding, thank you.
Thanks to Maryna’s family that made the long and difficult journey from Ukraine to be with us here. From today, they are part of our family too.
Thanks to my and Adriana’s godfathers that came from Romania; to Adriana’s sister from USA and nephew from France who are with us today; to all the relatives that wished us well but, for some blessed reasons, cannot be with us today.
Thanks to my brother and his family for taking this new family under their wing as godfathers.
And thank you, all of our guests, for sharing this joy with us.
Thanks to Father Ioan and Deacon Cristian for the beautiful service and all those who made it beautiful.
And if I forgot someone, as I usually do, I humbly ask for forgiveness, but you are always in our hearts.
Now let's get merry and start this new family on its way. God Bless!
Casă de piatră!
