Statement by the Leader of the Opposition on International Women's Day

OTTAWA -- Leader of the Official Opposition and interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada Rona Ambrose issued the following statement today on International Women's Day:

“On behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada, I am pleased to join all Canadians in marking International Women’s Day 2016.

“Women have made tremendous progress towards true equality, but much work remains to achieve our goals. As Canadian women, we are fortunate to live in a society where our rights are recognized and our contributions are valued. However, having lived in developing countries, I have seen first-hand what it means to be a girl or a woman with no rights. As the leader of a political party, I feel a special responsibility to create new opportunities for young women, both here and abroad. We need to build a society where women have greater access to education and the freedom to compete without fear of violence, intimidation or intolerance.

“Throughout my political life, I have made these issues a priority. I was proud to lead a successful United Nations resolution to create the International Day of the Girl, which raises awareness of discrimination faced by girls globally. I am also proud of the work I and my Conservative colleagues have done to support women and families facing domestic abuse, and to enshrine equal matrimonial property rights for indigenous women.

“These initiatives are proof that women in politics can make a real difference in advancing equality. Just as women in Canada worked together to achieve the right to vote a hundred years ago, I believe we can raise our voices to do great things in 2016 and beyond.

“On behalf of Canada’s Official Opposition, I commend all who are working to advance women’s rights in every field of endeavor.”
