GO Transit supports National Rail Safety Public Awareness Week

GO Transit is proud to support the National Rail Safety Public Awareness Week, April 27 to May 3, 2009. Helping reduce crossing collisions and trespassing incidents along Canada’s railways is the main focus of this week and GO’s goal is to educate the public on safety around its railway crossings, tracks, and at stations.

During the National Rail Safety Week, GO Transit will host Rail & Road Safety Day, welcoming over 400 grade 3 and 4 students to learn safety lessons in an interactive way. Students from across the GTA will spend the day at Union Station participating in 13 educational stations hosted by members of the Toronto Area Safety Coalition. GO is also holding a customer contest on its website highlighting the importance of rail safety. Correct entries will be eligible to win one of three GO monthly passes.

GO Transit encourages the public to be careful near railway property and always pay attention to signs and signals. Some other safety tips include stand well back of the yellow safety line when standing on train platforms; be careful of the gaps between the platform and the train when you get on and off the train; enter and exit the station platform from designated areas; and obey railway crossing warning signs and signals.

Throughout the year, GO participates in many safety outreach events and partners with the rail industry, safety organizations, law enforcement, and different levels of government to promote safety and reduce preventable accidents. GO Transit is dedicated to keeping the public and its customers safe. GO’s safety programs and practices have made the system one of the safest in North America.

For more information on National Rail Safety Public Awareness Week, please visit Operation Lifesaver’s website at www.operationlifesaver.ca. For GO information, the public can call 416.869.3200, 1.888.GET ON GO (438.6646), or 1.800.387.3652 TTY, or visit gotransit.com.

GO Transit is the Province of Ontario’s interregional public transit system linking Toronto with the surrounding regions of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). GO carries nearly 55 million passengers a year in an extensive network of train and bus services that spans over 8,000 square kilometres.
