An economic action plan for Canada
Date: January 26, 2009
For release: Immediate
OTTAWA -- Today, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, delivered the Government’s Speech from the Throne. In her speech, the Governor General provided more details on the next step in the Harper Government’s Economic Action Plan for Canada.
In particular, the Governor General’s speech said that Government action will:
· Stimulate the economy, both through direct government action and by encouraging private expenditure;
· Take immediate steps to build Canada through new investment in infrastructure;
· Protect the stability of our financial system;
· Ensure access to credit for businesses and consumers;
· Support Canadian industries in difficulty ― including forestry, manufacturing, automotive, tourism, agriculture ― and to protect the families and communities who depend on those jobs.
Each of these actions will help protect the jobs of today while readying our economy to create the jobs of tomorrow.
Many of the concepts outlined in the Throne Speech will be explained in further details when the Minister of Finance introduces a new Federal Budget on Tuesday, January 27.
