Message from UNICEF Canada Child Ambassador
My name is Bilaal Rajan, I'm 11-years-old and a UNICEF Canada Child Ambassador. I'm writing to you to let you know that I've launched a national fundraising campaign called, Me and You for the Children of Myanmar to benefit UNICEF Canada's emergency appeal for the affected children of the Myanmar cyclone.
Cyclone Nargis hit the low-lying regions of southwest Myanmar (formerly Burma) on May 3, 2008. Tens of thousands of people are reported dead or missing and the number of people affected by the disaster is reported to be more than one million, 30 per cent of which are children.
To help the kids in Myanmar, I'm challenging every child in Canada to raise $105. With the support of your family, teachers and friends it's easy to do. Your donations will go directly toward helping the kids in Myanmar to make sure they can go to school and have food, shelter and medicine.
Children can participate in school-based fundraising activities, download information and a challenge poster at the UNICEF Canada Web site at www.unicef.ca, or organize their own fundraising with family, neighbours and friends.
I was motivated to create this fundraising challenge after seeing that kids my age are really suffering. They are wearing torn clothes, playing in dirty water and climbing over destroyed houses that once were probably their homes. It reminds me of how privileged we are in Canada. I believe that all children deserve the life that my friends and I have and sometimes take for granted. But right now children and their families in Myanmar are in crisis.
I'm challenging each child in Canada to raise $105 because that is enough to provide a water kit for ten households, with detergent, soap, wash basin, towels, a bucket and water purification tablets. These simple supplies will help prevent deadly diseases which are caused because of a lack of clean water.
With the participation of Canadian kids and their parents in the Me and You for the Children of Myamar challenge, UNICEF can ensure that these children and their families are getting exactly what they need to survive. Together, we have the power to save thousands of lives; by simply ensuring that the people of Myanmar have their basic needs met.
The children of Myanmar need our help and we have the power to make a difference. There is no time to waste so please join the Me and You for the Children of Myanmar Challenge now!
For more information on the challenge visit www.unicef.ca and learn how your school can help or call UNICEF Canada at 1-800-567-4483.
