Elysse Poetis - Inside the mind of a poetess

Living in a refugee camp was a challenging time in Elysse Poetis's life, but she welcomed each day by seeing the beauty in her surroundings instead of sadness and suffering.
Those experiences and skills of survival have helped form Poetis book, The Mind of a Poetess: a true contemporary story, a collection of short stories and poems based on Poetis life back in Eastern Europe and after her immigration to Canada.

In her book, the native Romanian poet and Brampton resident touches on an array of topics, from politics to fashion, and everything in between. She hopes the vastness of her subject matter will encourage readers of all ages and backgrounds.

Inclusion is an idea Poetis says she has always felt very strongly about. She uses The Mind of a Poetess to promote this thought.

"I mention all over the book my special global friends because I wanted to go against all the barriers that are being put up in front of us as a global community" she said. The author even dedicates her book to the "global race" and says that her inspiration for The Mind of a Poetess grew with each wave of newcomers to Brampton, which gave her the opportunity to see and experience the cultures of the world.

Poetis started writing the book in 2001 after finding herself alone following a difficult divorce. Now remarried, she says that, although that period was a lonely time in her life, she never used her circumstances as an excuse not to write. "We were born with all the intelligence needed to survive and I believe that is the only thing we need to survive, we need ourselves and a bit of peace I would say."

She hopes this collection will emancipate minds and help people lead healthier lives, mentally, physically, spiritually and intellectually.

In the future, this mother and grandmother plans to continue to spread her message of compassion and to take inspiration from her environment.

"I intend to write practically, to write positively and to provoke in every considerable way 'the Globals' to come together and to once and for all to look in each other's eyes with trust to hold hands and to remember that it is one god, one people," said Poetis.

Poetis will be at a book signing at 1:30 p.m. on July 16 at Coles, 25 Peel Centre Dr. For information, e-mail vonderalpsmarketing@rogers.com.
