Stay Clear, Stay Safe This Easter Weekend
Remaining ice near hydropower stations is not safe
TORONTO, March 28, 2018 /CNW/ - Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is reminding the public that this Easter weekend, when families are outdoors enjoying the weather, they should stay clear of ice or water near OPG's hydropower facilities.
"This holiday weekend when you're outdoors with your family and friends, stay away from ice near OPG dams," said Mike Martelli, OPG President Renewable Generation. "Any remaining ice this time of year isn't safe for recreational activities, especially if it is near one of our facilities."
Ice formations near hydropower stations are never safe. Due to changing flows and water levels, ice is always weaker near hydropower stations than anywhere else. All OPG facilities are clearly marked with signs, fences and booms warning the public where it is not safe. At anytime of year it is important to obey these signs and stay away from the dangerous water or thin ice at OPG dams and hydropower stations.
OPG generates safe, clean, reliable, low-cost power for Ontario. More than 99 per cent of this power is free of smog and carbon emissions. OPG's electricity is priced 40 per cent lower than other generators, which helps moderate customer bills.
