Ottawa : EU Ambassador to mark International Women's Day at TSX
OTTAWA – European Union Ambassador Peteris Ustubs will open the markets on the International Women's Day tomorrow at the Toronto Stock Exchange. Ambassador Ustubs will be in Toronto to promote WE EMPOWER, a recently-launched European Union initiative for Women's Economic Empowerment, in partnership with UN Women and the International Labour Organization.
Over the next three years, the €6.5 million joint initiative will foster responsible business by bringing together business leaders and other stakeholders from various sectors and industries in G7 countries, in an effort to support the implementation of the G7 Roadmap for a Gender-Responsive Economic Environment.
The market opening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Ambassador Ustubs, Michelle Holland, Toronto City Counsellor for Innovation, and Unilever Canada Vice President John Cone.
"Gender equality and women's rights are at the core of EU foreign and domestic policies and enshrined in EU law," said Ambassador Ustubs. "The empowerment of women also tops the G7 agenda as part of Canada's chairmanship this year, in recognition of women's contributions to society and their entrepreneurship as a key driver of innovation, growth and job creation."
WE EMPOWER reinforces the EU's Global Strategy, which sets the EU's foreign and security policy priorities, including efforts to fight gender inequality, promote responsible business and champion women's economic empowerment and participation in peace operations.
This is Ambassador Ustubs' second visit to Ontario's capital city this month. The Ambassador travelled to Toronto 4-5 March to support EU-Canada Mineral Cooperation, an EU-funded project launched last year to strengthen collaboration between the two partners in the non-energy extractive industries.
