Alianta's Awards Gala
Honoring the accomplishments of Robert D. Kaplan, Dr. Adrian Bejan and Radu Georgescu
Washington, DC. On October 7, 2015, Alianta, a nonpartisan alliance of Romanian and American organizations and professionals, will hold its second Awards Gala to raise Romania's profile in the U.S. and celebrate achievements in the Romanian and U.S. communities. Alianta's Awards Gala is the community's largest social event in Washington, D.C. and is held to celebrate the cultural, economic and security ties between the two countries. This event, taking place from 6 pm to 9:30 pm, will be held at the Organization of American States, 200 17th Street, NW, Washington, D.C. In addition to honoring the accomplishments of three remarkable leaders, Robert D. Kaplan, Author, Journalist; Dr. Adrian Bejan, J.A. Jones Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Duke University; Radu Georgescu, Software Entrepreneur, the Awards Gala will feature a curated exhibition, "Mediums," by renowned Romanian-American artists Ramona Todoca and Sonia Coman. The event will also bring together thinkers and practitioners striving to strengthen ties and establish new bridges between Romania and the United States through creative partnerships and bilateral initiatives.

Alianta is thrilled to present this year's awards for outstanding accomplishments to the following three recipients: • Robert D. Kaplan, Author, Journalist Robert D. Kaplan is the bestselling author of 15 books on foreign affairs and travel, including The Revenge of Geography and Balkan Ghosts. His equally extensive journalistic work has been published in The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Washington Post and Foreign Affairs. He is also a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security. In 2012, Foreign Policy magazine named him one the world's Top 100 Global Thinkers. His upcoming book, In Europe's Shadow: Two Cold Wars and a Thirty-Year Journey through Romania and Beyond, is a riveting journey through Romania and an analysis of the forces determining Europe's evolution in the postmodern age, including imperialism, Cold War and the Holocaust. After conducting his first visit through Romania in the 1970s, the author returned in 2013 and 2014. He found a country transformed into a traveler's destination shaped by Western influences, but still emerging from communist factors. The book will be released in early 2016. Robert D. Kaplan will be available to give interviews and answer questions during Alianta's Awards Gala. • Dr. Adrian Bejan, J.A. Jones Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Duke University Having recently developed the Constructal Law of organization and evolution in nature, Dr. Bejan has been ranked among the world's 100 most highly cited authors in engineering since 2001. He has received 18 honorary doctorates from universities in 11 countries. He has covered a wide range of topics, from thermodynamics to heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Dr. Bejan has published 28 books and over 600 peer-referred articles. • Radu Georgescu, Software Entrepreneur Radu Georgescu has been a serial entrepreneur in the tech and software industry in Romania since the early 1990s. He is the founder of GECAD Group, which focuses on investing in software and high-tech companies in areas of security software, e-commerce and cloud technologies. He has been involved in launching multiple ventures, such RAV AntiVirus, which was purchased by Microsoft in 2004, as well as Avangate, sold to a U.S. private equity firm. For his accomplishments, he received numerous awards, including the National Order 'Romania's Star' from the President of Romania in 2003.
