Anca's University Fund
Like and share an amazing talent and help achieve her dream to study and dance in New York at Marymount Manhattan College.
Anca was born in Arad, Romania, in 1997. She started aerobic gymnastics when she was five years old. Her determination, hard work, and passion for gymnastics enabled her to successfully compete both nationally and internationally. She won many competitions in Romania, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary, including the Romanian National Championship and the European Championship.
At the age of 11, Anca moved with her family to Toronto, Canada, where she fell in love with the art of dance. She is currently a Grade 12 Dance Major at the Etobicoke School of the Arts and also trains competitively at the Sean Boutilier Academy of Dance. Anca excels in several styles, such as ballet (Cecchetti - Advanced 1), pointe, jazz, lyrical, tap, contemporary, modern, acro, and hip-hop.
Over the past seven years, Anca finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in several dance competitions, including Dance Overalls at Terpsichore, Dance Canada, Hall of Fame New York, Move Dance, Flash Dance, Jump Canada, Fever, Odyssey, and Be Dance. In 2014, she received a summer scholarship at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. She has worked with elite choreographers, such as Sean Boutilier, Stephanie Rutherford, Dana Chapman, Josie Walsh, Tokyo Kevin, Desmond Richardson, Mike Esperanza, Mia Michaels and many more.
Anca has always dreamt of becoming a professional dancer in New York. Little did she know that this could someday become reality. Her dream came true when she was accepted at the Marymount Manhattan College in New York. She intends to pursue a Bachelor of Art Dance Major which will take four years to complete. Anca was also placed on the waiting-list at the Juilliard School as a BFA Dance Major. In the fall of 2015, she hopes to attend Marymount. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, she cannot afford tuition and housing (CAD 60,000 per year).
Immigrant life has many challenges. Both Anca's parents work full-time and her father often takes overnight shifts to make extra money and to pay for Anca's expensive training classes, choreography, competition fees, and costumes. Anca's 12-year-old sister also trains as a synchronized swimmer at competitive level (Fina team) with the Etobicoke Olympium. When Anca is not at school or in a dance studio, she works part-time to pay for her dance training.
Her family are doing everything within their power to help her achieve her full potential and her life-long dreams, but they cannot cover all the expenses that Anca will incur during her studies. Time is also a major factor as she has to apply for the US Student Visa. To receive it she has to prove that she has available funds of USD 45,000 = CAD 60,000 each year (US $180,000 in total).
The estimated annual expenses for an F-1 visa student living in a Marymount Manhattan College residence hall for the 2014-15 academic year are:
Tuition & Fees: $27,636 USD
Living Expenses (room & board): $15,000 USD
Other (medical insurance/books/transp.): $2,600 USD
Total: $45,236 USD/year
