Statement by Ontario PC Interim Leader Jim Wilson - Recognizing Romania’s National Day

Buna ziua,

This year, Romania’s National Day marks the 96th anniversary of the country’s unification on December 1, 1918. On this special occasion of the Great Union Day, members of the Canadian Romanian community in Ontario celebrate the formation of the Romanian state within its present-day boundaries.

Although Romania’s full independence had been recognized in 1878, it was not until December 1, 1918 when Romania – comprised of Moldova and Wallachia at the time – was united with Transylvania, Crisana, Banat and the Maramures area.

It was the spirit of unity that brought Romanians together as a nation in 1918, and it is the same spirit shown by Romanians around the world today as they stand united and proud of their home country.

As members of the Romanian community in Ontario celebrate unification and freedom, they also commemorate the Romanians who died during the First World War.

Today, it is an honour for me to recognize the many contributions of the Romanian community in our province, as well as its rich history and vibrant cultural heritage. Members of the Romanian community are hard-working people with strong national pride, never forgetting their history and cultural traditions. Your presence has contributed and continues to contribute greatly to Ontario’s growth and prosperity, and I want to thank you for that.

On this special occasion of the National Day of Romania, and on behalf of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Caucus, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to the entire Romanian Canadian Community for a happy National Day.

Cu ocazia Zilei Nationale urez tuturor romanilor La Multi Ani Romania.

Jim Wilson     12/1/2014
