Canada Announces Support for Free and Fair Elections in Moldova
Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced that Canada would support democratic elections in Moldova by providing up to 20 election observers to monitor and report on the country’s November 30 parliamentary elections. “While some in the region seek to impede the advancement of freedom and democracy, Canada’s support for elections in Moldova demonstrates our commitment to the Moldovan people and all those who are determined to pursue an independent, democratic future under the rule of law,” said Baird.
The Canadian short-term observers will deploy through the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights election observation mission for Moldova.
“Through the OSCE, Canada will once again play an important role in fostering democracy and good governance in the region,” said Baird. “Canada is proud to support trained and experienced observers who will support the Moldovan people as they head to the polls to exercise their democratic rights.” Canadians interested in applying to become short-term observers for the OSCE mission can visit Canadian Election Observation Missions. -
