Statement on the 2014 Toronto Mayoral Election
“I wish to congratulate Toronto Mayor-elect John Tory on his victory tonight and his hard-fought campaign. As the federal minister responsible for the Greater Toronto Area, I look forward to working with John to improve the quality of life for all Torontonians by further strengthening the GTA's economy through job creation, lower taxes and building modern public infrastructure. “Our Government understands that the top priorities of the people of Toronto, and the whole of the GTA, are relieving traffic congestion, creating jobs and keeping taxes low. “Since 2006, under the leadership of Prime Minister Harper, our Government has invested $33 billion in vital infrastructure including $4.54 billion across the GTA. In Economic Action Plan 2013 we announced the New Building Canada Plan, which combined with other funding, will provide $70 billion over the next 10 years. This is the largest federal investment in job-creating infrastructure in Canadian history. “A fair share of that will be spent in Toronto. We have already pledged to build the Scarborough subway and have invested in the Spadina subway extension, in addition to hundreds of millions of dollars in modernization projects at the TTC, the revitalization of recreational and cultural facilities like the former Maple Leaf Gardens and the Toronto Reference Library and many other projects that enhance the daily lives of the people of Toronto. “Our Government is actively helping local municipalities across Canada, including Toronto, build a better future.” -----------------------
