Ontario Parks - 2014 Program

Learn to Camp @ Ontario Parks will:

o Introduce new visitors to the amazing provincial parks of Ontario
o Help new visitors gain the skills and confidence they need to have a safe and enjoyable camping trip
o Inspire new visitors to become life-long campers

The Ontario Parks Learn to Camp program is based on three elements:
1. On-line resources
2. Community outreach and engagement
3. Overnight camping experience
What’s new in 2014?
o Additional program spaces and locations. Our overnight camping experience is now available at 9 provincial parks!
o Access the overnight camping experience on the Parkbus transportation service running between Toronto and Grundy Lake Provincial Park.
o Try our new Learn to Fish program as part of the Learn to Camp experience at 6 provincial parks.

The Learn to Camp program is presented in partnership with Coleman Canada. Canadian Tire is the official retail partner of the Learn to Camp program.

The 2014 Learn to Camp Program

A. Experience camping
Find everything you need to participate in a Learn to Camp experience:
o Access detailed information about the overnight camping experience
o Register for an overnight camping experience

B. Camping resources
Thinking of planning your own camping trip? Look no further than our comprehensive online resources to help you get started. We offer a range of tips and advice to help visitors:
o Find the right park and accommodations
o Pack and prepare for a trip using checklists and sample meal plans


o View helpful video tips covering topics such as setting up a tent and lighting a campfire
o Find helpful advice on a wide variety of topics including: meal planning, camping equipment and life at the campsite.

Overnight Camping Experience
Offered at 9 provincial parks, the overnight camping experience is the ultimate way to learn how to camp! This fun and interactive experience provides hands-on training on all the basic skills of camping with the support and guidance of experienced Ontario Parks staff.
The overnight camping experience:
o Supplies participants will all the equipment required to camp

(Participants are responsible for food and bedding)
o Teaches a range of camping skills to ensure participants have the confidence and skills required to have a safe and fun camping trip
o Provides each group of up to 6 people (children included) with their own campsite and equipment
o Takes place in a campground with access to flush toilets, hot showers and drinking water
o Provides recreation time to explore and experience the park

Curriculum:
Throughout the experience our participants come together for a series of group learning sessions. Following each session, camping equipment is distributed, and the instructors check in one on one to ensure every group is comfortable.

Learn to Camp teaching sessions include:
o The Camping Kitchen: set-up, cooking and clean-up
o How to set up a tent
o Safe and fun camping
o How to build a campfire
o What to expect at night
o Campsite clean-up
o Planning your next trip

Duration:
o Participants can choose between a one or two night experience. The two night experience is available to provide additional time to practice new camping skills and enjoy the park
o Campsite check out time is 2:00pm on the final day, but participants may enjoy park facilities until the park closes for the day

Who can participate?
o Learn to Camp programs are open to anyone who is new to camping
o Past participants who would like additional training may sign-up for graduates programming
o Pets are not permitted at Learn to Camp programs

Learn to Camp Programs with Transportation
No Transportation? No Problem! Access the overnight camping experience on the Parkbus transportation service running between Toronto and Grundy Lake Provincial Park. All you need to do is register for a Learn to Camp program at Grundy Lake and we will help you book your seat on the Parkbus.
Learn to Fish at Ontario Parks
Reel in the fun by complimenting your camping experience with a Learn to Fish program! This hands-on experience led by experienced anglers will help you learn everything you need to know to get started with fishing. Whether you want to take up a new hobby or help your children catch their first fish, you will make new memories and enjoy nature.
Learn to fish programs are included in the Learn to Camp experience at the following six provincial parks:
o Darlington o Grundy Lake
o Earl Rowe o Emily
o Sibbald Point o Six Mile Lake

The Learn to Camp Graduates Program
Our graduates program provides past participants with an opportunity to become more comfortable with camping through additional training and experience.
Graduates may choose between two options:
1. Graduates Program with instruction
o Geared towards graduates who would like additional training
o Provides a more independent camping experience with access to Learn to Camp programming for support and training
o Offered at 8 provincial parks
o Option to choose between a one or two night experience

2. Independent camping experience at Grundy Lake Provincial Park
o Geared towards building confidence in graduates
o Ability to book a camping trip longer than 2 days
o Equipment is provided upon arrival, without dedicated Learn to Camp programming

Learn to Camp Registration Fees:
All fees include:
o A detailed information package in advance of the experience
o A campsite for up to six participants, including children
o Use of camping equipment and park facilities for the entire stay
o Parking for 1 vehicle at the campsite
o Access to flush toilets, showers and potable water
o Teaching sessions led by Ontario Parks staff*
o One bag of ice and firewood*
o Campfire treats*

*not included in the independent graduates experience at Grundy Lake Provincial Park

Learn to Camp Registration Fees 2014:
Option Fee per Group
All 1 night / 2 day programs $80.00 + HST
All 2 night / 3 day programs $123.75 + HST
Independent Graduates Program at Grundy Lake Regular Ontario Parks Camping fees
+
Learn to Camp Program fee
($40.00 + HST for the first night, then $30.00 + HST per additional night)
