Piano turned into mammoth calculator by winner of the Shell International Engineering Competition
The winners of an intense 24-hour ingenuity challenge for engineering students from around the world were announced on Friday after an intense finale between teams from Italy, Canada, Sweden and Romania.
Romania won the overall Shell International Innovation Award, presented by Shell Canada to the student team that showed the greatest level of human ingenuity. Additional awards went to: DESIGN CHALLENGE – Politehnica of Romania (first place), University of Calgary (second place), and Royal Institute of Technology from Sweden (third place)
CONSULTING CHALLENGE – University of British Colombia (first place), Politecnico de Milan (second place), and University of Alberta (third place)
The People’s Choice Award, presented by Beakerhead, was earned by University of Calgary (Canada), and the Engineering Impact Award, presented by Engineeers Canada, was taken by Politecnico de Milan (Italy).
60 students from Europe, the USA and Canada gathered in Calgary, Canada for this inaugural Shell International Engineering Competition. Their challenges included turning a piano into a calculator and finding an innovative solution to dispose of or recycle used tires from oil sands mining trucks.
“Congratulations to all of the teams who participated in this week’s competition and to Team Romania who are the winners of the Shell International Innovation Award,” said Lorraine Mitchelmore, Shell Canada President and Country Chair. “All of the students displayed exceptional problem-solving skills and innovative thinking. It is clear that the ingenuity displayed today will play a key role in helping us find solutions that will help shape our energy futures.”
The Shell International Engineering Competition is part of Beakerhead— a five day event of exhibitions, competitions, art entertainment, science and engineering in the streets and venues of Calgary The students were competing in two areas: design and consulting. In the design competition, they were each given a full piano, a set of pool balls, and access to some tools. They had 24-hours to make the piano be able to perform specific calculation commands. In the consulting competition, they were given an intellectual challenge: to develop a strategy for the handling, storage, and disposal or recycling of used, two-story tall truck tires used in oil sands development.
