Across Ontario, $13.1 million was raised with more than 62,000 participants in 22 communities
TORONTO, Sept. 30, 2012 /CNW/ - More than 18,000 Torontonians gathered today at the University of Toronto, St. George (downtown) Campus to help raise over $4.2 million for breast cancer research, education and awareness.
Across Canada, over $30 million was raised with 170,000 people participating in 60 communities. This year more than 62,000 people participated in the province of Ontario with $13.1 million raised. The CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada's largest, single-day, community-driven fundraising event in support of the breast cancer cause.
"Today, women diagnosed with breast cancer are living longer and with a better quality of life, thanks to tremendous research advancements made possible by our community's contributions," says Sandra Palmaro, CEO of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Ontario Region. "But with one in nine Canadian women being diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, there is still so much to learn. I want to congratulate today's participants across Ontario for their commitment to continued investment in innovative and relevant research".
Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is the largest non-governmental funder of breast cancer research in Canada and one of the largest in the world. Its investments in research and fellowships are changing the landscape of what is known and understood about breast health and breast cancer and have enabled advancements in prevention, earlier detection, breast cancer treatment and patient care.
"Our thanks to all of the participants, the volunteers and the donors, whose contributions are helping to create a future without breast cancer. Seeing so many dedicated people come together for the breast cancer cause makes us very proud to be the title sponsor of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure," says Christina Kramer, Executive Vice-President, CIBC.
