Halloween Safety Tips
October 23, (Mississauga, ON) – St. John Ambulance in Mississauga, recognizes that because parents are busy preparing their excited children for Halloween night, but with the distraction of the candy and costumes, safety rules can be easily forgotten.
Telling children not to eat candy until they get home, or to stay close to home, isn’t enough. The leading cause of injuries is falls and children are four times more likely to be struck and killed by a car on Halloween than any other night of the year.
Consider the following safety tips to prevent tragedies from happening. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. Older children, who go out on their own, should travel in groups, carry a cell phone and know contact numbers. Set a curfew and know the route in advance of children setting out. Children should wear something reflective or light coloured. Carrying a flashlight is always a good idea. Avoid costumes that drag on the ground, are dark or cannot be layered over warmer clothing. But avoid overheating by wearing costumes that are too hot if it is a warmer night. Running shoes or shoes that light up are fun and provide added safety on a dark night. High heels or novelty shoes should be avoided and children should be encouraged to walk – not run as obstacles on lawns and curbs are not often visible at night. To maintain unrestricted vision, avoid masks wherever possible by using make-up. Only trick or treat at those houses that are lit. Teach your children to have respect for those people and homes that do not partake of the festivities. Adults should inspect candy and remove choking hazards for younger children. Drive safely and slowly in residential areas and remember that children are distracted. Clear pathways, turn on outside lights and keep your pets indoors if you’re expecting trick or treaters.
