Inspre Crŕciunul lui '71, americanii au fost sedusi de single-ul Brand New Key lansat de Melanie. Nŕscutŕ la 3 februarie 1947 în Astoria, Queens, New York sub numele de Melanie Safka, interpreta si compozitoarea de muzicŕ folk si-a început cariera artisticŕ de vârsta de patru ani, dar a început sŕ cânte cu adevŕrat de prin anii când era studentŕ la New York Academy of Fine Arts. Dintre creatiile ei de succes, Brand New Key a urcat pe primul loc în topul de la Billboard, single-ul vânzându-se în peste trei milioane de exemplare.
"I rode my bicycle past your window last night / I roller skated to your door at daylight / It almost seems like you're avoiding me / I'm okay alone, but you got something I need // Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates / You got a brand new key / I think that we should get together and try them out you see / I been looking around awhile / You got something for me / Oh! Mŕ rog, la ce, exact, se potrivea cheia cea nouŕ - vorba francezilor - "n'est pas dit dans la chanson"...
Tot în 1971 Melanie a mai înregistrat un succes cu melodia grupui New Seekers What Have They Done To My Song, Ma, care a ajuns pe locul 39 în topul britanic. "Look what they've done to my song, Ma / Look what they've done to my song! / Well it's the only thing I could do half right / And it's turning out all wrong / Look what they've done to my song"... "Look what they've done to my brain, Ma / Look what they've done to my brain / Well they've cooked it like a chicken bone / I think I'm half insane, Ma / Look what they've done to my brain // Ils ont changé ma chanson, Ma / Ils ont changé ma chanson! / C'est la seule chose je peux faire / Et çe n'est pas bon, Ma / Ils ont changé ma chanson".
Pentru cŕ veni vorba de limba francezŕ, grupul Aphrodite’s Child a intrat în topul francez la începutul lui 1971 cu melodia (lansatŕ la sfârsitul lui '70) Marie Jolie. O excelentŕ compozitie în stil romantic, pe frumoase versuri semnate de R. Francis, cu vocea lui Demis Roussos usor prelucratŕ electronic: "Sometimes I feel / I'm alone / and I wonder what I'd do / if I couldn't turn to you / You are all my life and more / take this love I give / Marie jolie / Marie jolie // The seasons change / but love remains / growing like a rose in spring. / All the summer sun can bring / I will find it when I'm with you / You are all I have / Marie Jolie"...
Tot prin 1971 francezul Daniel Gérard, un "one-hit-wonder", încânta inimile europenilor cu foxtrott-ul sŕu "Butterfly" de care, se pare, nord-americanii n-au auzit niciodatŕ cu toatŕ sansa pe care interpretul si-a oferit-o cântând si în limba englezŕ. "Fell in love in the wink of an eye, / with a girl who was called Butterfly. / She said she loved me so, she could not let me go, / but still I had to say good bye". Poate vŕ mai amintiti refrenul: "Butterfly, my butterfly, I'll come home to you one day, / Butterfly, my butterfly, wait for me don't fly away". Pentru auditoriul germanofon, refrenul zicea asa: "Butterfly, my Butterfly, jeder Tag mit dir war schön! / Butterfly, my Butterfly, wann werd' ich dich wiederseh'n?".
De multe ori m-am întrebat: oare ce mai fac în ziua de azi unii sau altii din cântŕreti care au dispŕrut demult de pe firmamentul muzicii rock si de care nu prea se mai aude nimic? Ei bine, unii, care au luat-o mai usurel si nu si-au trŕit viata "like a candle in the wind" nici n-o duc chiar rŕu. Sunt, într-un fel, ca aristocratia azi: detronatŕ de burghezie, dar trŕind comod si discret din gloria apusŕ. Melanie, spre exemplu, deschisese acum vreo cinci ani, împreunŕ cu sotul ei Peter Schekeryk, un restaurant si o cafenea în Tarpon Springs, Florida. Mai face turnee prin Europa cu fiul ei Beau-Jarred si mai cântŕ, ocazional, si cu cele douŕ fiice, Leilah si Jeordie, lansate în lumea interpretilor profesionisti sub numele de "Safka".
Fŕrŕ sŕ ajungŕ pânŕ în Top 10, dar de remarcabil succes, a fost si melodia lui John Denver Take Me Home, Country Roads. “Almost heaven, West Virginia / Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River / Life is old there, older than the trees / Younger than the mountains growin' like a breeze. // Country roads, take me home / To the place I belong / West Virginia, mountain mama / Take me home, country roads.” Pe numele sŕu adevŕrat Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr., fiu de aviator militar, John s-a nŕscut în localitatea devenitŕ celebrŕ prin povestea cu OZN-urile, Roswell în New Mexico. Schimbându-si numele dupŕ localitatea sa preferatŕ - Denver - tânŕrul Henry Jr. (prea miop ca sŕ fie acceptat în meseria tatŕlui) s-a lansat în muzicŕ. Apŕrut mai întâi pe LP-ul “Poems, Prayers and Promises“, cântecul a fost lansat ca single în primŕvara lui ’71 si pânŕ la sfârsitul verii a atins cifra de un milion de exemplare vândute. De atunci Take Mw Home... a intrat în categoria “evergreen” fiind prezent în repertoriul “clasic” al discotecilor si posturilor de radio. Dacŕ vŕ mai amintiti, pe la noi slagŕrul era interpretat de Gil Dobricŕ... Fiul meu, care a petrecut doi ani în Slovacia predând limba englezŕ, povestea cum prin discoteci se mai putea auzi prin 2001 melodia lui Denver, iar tinerii slovaci cântau cu entuziasm “Country roads, take me home / To the place I belong / West Virginia, mountain mama...” O fi ceva rŕu cu muntii Tatra?
Un alt mare succes al anului 1971 în stilul country-rock a fost melodia Rose Garden a cântŕretei si compozitoarei Lynn Anderson. Nŕscutŕ în Dakota de Nord, din pŕrinti compozitori, Lynn si-a început cariera muzicalŕ din adolescentŕ, dezvoltându-si treptat talentul si înclinatia pentru stilul country. Rose Garden, înregistratŕ întâi pe disc single si apoi în album la casa Columbia Records, a ajuns rapid în fruntea clasamentelor country si pop (locul 3 la Billboard, categoria Rock Singles), vânzându-se în peste 18 milioane de exemplare. "I beg your pardon / I never promised you a rose garden / Along with the sunshine / There's gotta be a little rain some time / When you take you gotta give so live and let live / Or let go oh-whoa-whoa-whoa / I beg your pardon / I never promised you a rose garden. // I could promise you things like big diamond rings / But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover / So you better think it over / Well if sweet-talkin' you could make it come true / I would give you the world right now on a silver platter / But what would it matter / So smile for a while and let's be jolly / Love shouldn't be so melancholy / Come along and share the good times while we can // I beg your pardon / I never promised you a rose garden..." Dupŕ spusele lui Lynn, în cel de-al saptelea deceniou al secolului trecut, doar douŕ cântece au depŕsit în succes Rose Garden: "Hey Jude" si "Bridge Over Troubled Water".
Un alt britanic de succes în anii '60-'70 a fost si Tom Jones. Melodia She's a Lady a urcat la începutul lui 1971 pânŕ pe locul al doilea în topul de la Billboard. Vocea caldŕ, usor voalatŕ, profundŕ, puternicŕ si învŕluitoare a fiului de miner din |ara Galilor a frânt multe inimi de ambele pŕrti ale Atlanticului. "Well she's all you'd ever want, / She's the kind they'd like to flaunt and take to dinner. / Well she always knows her place. / She's got style, she's got grace, She's a winner. / She's a Lady. Whoa whoa whoa, She's a Lady. / Talkin' about that little lady, and the lady is mine"... }i cum sŕ nu fi fost She's a Lady o melodie de succes când a fost compusŕ de un canadian de-ai nostri, Paul Anka!
