Museum of Estonians Abroad/VEMU
April events begin with an online film screening of Chasing Unicorns (in English) followed by a conversation with the director Rain Rannu on April 11. The film follows a young startup entrepreneur and her friend from small town Estonia to Silicon Valley and back. On April 15, Estonian Music Week's Memories of Home online concert series will continue with its third show featuring Roman Smirnov, a classical and flamenco guitarist and composer. On April 23 will be the 9th annual VEMU fundraising event, this year featuring a virtual program celebrating 30 years of Estonian independence with speaker Marju Lauristin, singer Ivo Linna and a catered take out dinner. Finally, on April 28, Cooking with Pastor Mart will return with its second instalment. All event info can be found at their website.
The Royal Conservatory
The Royal Conservatory continues to present remarkable performances online throughout April. Hear solo and chamber works performed by Rebanks Fellows from The Glenn Gould School at the free online Rebanks Family Fellowship Concert on Wednesday, April 7 at 7:30pm. The ARC Ensemble (Artists of The Royal Conservatory) will perform the music of two exceptional Jewish composers, the Sephardic works of Alberto Hemsi and the elegant classical compositions of Vittorio Rieti, on Sunday, April 11 at 1pm at a free online concert. Kobo Town and Wesli will perform an intoxicating blend of Latin and world music on Wednesday, April 14 at 8pm. Tickets for this livestream concert are available for $20 per household and the broadcast will be available to watch online up to seven days after the livestream. World-renowned DJ and producer Skratch Bastid will collaborate with special guests Andrew Forde and re.verse at a free online concert on Friday, April 30 at 8pm Tickets are available online at their website or at 416.408.0208.
Alliance Française de Toronto
What’s going on at Alliance Française in April? They start April 1 with the book club at 6pm, with Théâtre Français de Toronto. Cinema is in the spotlight this month with three Sofa-Thursdays! Starting on April 15 with the award-winning movie Alice and the Mayor at 7:30pm. On April 16 and 17 (depending on your level of French) at 1pm, the guided tours are back with the fascinating Ophélie Delacour who will take us to the heart of Notre-Dame de Paris after its tragic fire! Dive into Eric Canuel's detective world with his movie Bon Cop Bad Cop on April 22 at 7:30 pm. Women's Art Association of Canada WAAC's current exhibition, Refractive Moments: Exploring Light and Life, continues until April 30. On April 15 at 1pm, WAAC presents Artist Voice ZOOM Lecture with Carolyn Jongeward, sharing stories of people, places, and ideas that have shaped her creativity as an abstract artist, tapestry weaver, researcher and writer/editor. WAAC Luncheon Program ZOOM lecture will be on April 28 at 1pm, with Jon Dellandrea's ‘The Great Canadian Art Fraud.’ Free early-bird until a week before. From March 27 to April 5, WAAC is proud to co-present Algorithm in Arts: Create Algorithmic Artworks using Javascript and Machine Learning with KCJ and CCA. Royal Ontario Museum Register for the next ROM Curator Conversations on April 8 - "That the prefecture may be tranquil": A Thousand-Year-Old Buddhist Print from Dunhuang. The ROM's Wen-chien Cheng, Dr. Jessica Lockhart, and Dr. Amanda Goodman explore how modern research can shed light on this devotional print. On April 15 the ROM brings you Describing Our World: Conservation and Wildlife Photography for Everyone. Join conservation and wildlife photographer Andrew Wright as he shares some of his favourite photographs and experiences. University of Toronto Faculty of Music The University of Toronto Faculty of Music kicks off the final month of the 2020-21 season with Now and Then, A Celebration of the Broadway Musical, featuring singers from the Faculty of Music under the guidance of guest coach Beau Dixon. This pre-recorded event is hosted by U of T Voice Studies and will be broadcast Monday, April 5 at 7:30 pm. And later in April, U of T Opera is pleased to present its season finale Opera in Miniature: A Festival of One Act Operas. Chosen from the extensive repertory of one act operas showcasing the poignancy and intimacy of the art form, these productions will be broadcast Thursday, April 22 through Sunday, April 25. The Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto welcomes spring with a number of special events during the month of April. The Istituto celebrates the 4th edition of “Day of Italian Research in the World” featuring a special conversation with cardiologist Prof. Gianluigi Bisleri (U of T) on “New Mini-Invasive Techniques in Aortic Surgery”. A special online event will be presented on Italy’s National Liberation Day, commemorating the end of the Fascist regime and the Nazi occupation of Italy and the victory of the country’s Resistance movement. IIC continues marking the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s passing with a special presentation by Prof. Elisa Brilli (UofT), world-renowned expert in all things Dante: “Biography and Self-Telling in Dante”. Check out April arts and culture offerings at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community in April! On April 7, join critic, writer, curator, and lecturer Angelo Muredda as he takes a critical look at Disability on Film. On April 8, attend a Holocaust commemoration (Yom Hashoah) concert: Songs of the Ghettos, Camps and Resistance featuring Cantor Sidney Ezer and Asher Farber. “Classical DJ” Howard Mednick lectures on The Founding of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra on Thursday April 15. For Youth 18-30 who identify with the experience of disability, Disability/Visibility is a free 7-week community arts project led by photographer Effie Biliris, starting on April 18, in partnership with Gallery 44 Starting April 19, learn Hebrew and Yiddish in a warm and welcoming setting from wherever you are! 9 levels of Hebrew, from beginners to conversation and 2 levels of Yiddish conversation, with day or nighttime class times. Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir Join Tafelmusik for a guided tour of baroque Europe through a colourful array of chamber works in On the Road on April 8, 2021 at 8pm EDT. Tafelmusik missed touring so much in 2020 that they decided to create a program around the idea of a virtual road trip, European baroque style! The itinerary includes stops in 17th- and 18th-century England, Germany, France, and Italy courtesy of chamber music by some of Tafelmusik’s favourite composers, including Purcell, Biber, and Vivaldi. Members of the orchestra enhance this concert with their personal travel stories from past Tafelmusik tours. The third Emergents project of the season welcomes the Women From Space festival as a presenting partner for a 4-set evening of online streams, featuring boundary-pushing improvisers and new collaborative ventures across disciplines. Featuring performances by Hannia, dancer Denise Solleza & trumpeter/composer Madeleine Ertel, poet/emcee Britta B & electronic producer Pursuit Grooves, and Montreal-based songwriter Thanya Iyer with flutist Anh Phung. The Music Gallery will also present Les Angles Mortes + Amahl Arulanandam, streamed for free by Suoni TV on April 1. Browse for your next great read from a collection of ebooks in English or Japanese. The JFT Library is a public lending library for anyone interested in Japan and Japanese culture. It maintains a collection of over 20,000 Japan-related print, digital, and audiovisual materials in English, Japanese and French, emphasizing language study, art, literature, history and culture. The Japan P.E.N. Club and The Japan Foundation, Toronto co-present The Impact of the Pandemic on Society and Creativity: Perspectives from Writers from Japan and Canada. The Bloor St. Culture Corridor, Toronto's most diverse arts and culture district, is a true creative cluster, an arts and culture destination, and a collaboration between some of Toronto's most dynamic arts and culture organizations.
The Bloor St. Culture Corridor offers the public a wide variety of arts genres, from museum experiences to films, art exhibitions to music concerts, and opportunities to experience some of Toronto's cultural diversity, including Aboriginal, French, Jewish, Italian, Japanese, Estonian, African and Caribbean arts and culture. All Bloor St. Culture Corridor organizations present arts and cultural events for the public year-round in destination venues located in a cluster along a vibrant stretch of Bloor Street West. Each year more than three million members of the public go to Bloor St. Culture Corridor arts and culture destinations, and attend exhibitions, performances, and events. Together, the Bloor St. Culture Corridor organizations employ more than 5,500 culture workers and generate more than $629,500,000 in economic impact each year. In 2016, The Bloor St. Culture Corridor was successful in working with the City of Toronto to have the Bloor St. Culture corridor section of Bloor St. West designated an official City of Toronto cultural corridor.
