International Inclusion and Innovation Network proposal – Ryerson University

The National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC) is pleased to pledge its support for the International Inclusion and Innovation Network and its letter of intent to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council partnership grant program. We agree to in principle the research objectives of the proposal, and would like to participate in this ground-breaking initiative should this letter of intent be successful.

The NEPMCC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and integrate economic, social and cultural interests of Ethnic communities into the mainstream of Canadian society. Canada, today is in a period of socio-economic changes in a world that is rapidly becoming more internationally-oriented, looking for new markets and searching for new partnerships. We believe that the ethnic press and the communities they serve will be important participants in Canada’s economic growth, with their global contacts and knowledge. We know media shapes as well as reflects values and we feel we can make an important contribution to understanding how stereotypes can be made and broken. Media forms part of the context within which organizations operate and often serves as a mediator between organizations and their stakeholders.

The research themes of Dr. Cukier’s International Inclusion and Innovation Network support several of our main organizational objectives; namely encouraging ethnic communities to achieve excellence and participate in Canadian society, and studying the barriers faced by ethnic groups in fully integrating into the mainstream society. Canada’s ethnic communities provide unique skills and experiences, and the proposed research into enablers and barriers to employment and advancement for diverse groups has the potential to help strengthen Canada’s economy and broaden its international reach.

Should the partnership be funded, the NEPMCC will provide in-kind support equivalent to $4,000 per year for the full duration of the partnership, totalling $24,000. This will consist of support in sharing media perspective and intelligence, access to networks in ethnic communities and assistance with the dissemination of the results and outcomes generated by this study through our events, activities, and communication channels.

Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to your decision.

Sincerely,

Maria Saras-Voutsinas
Executive Director and Senior VP Public Relations
