Labour Day in Canada
Statement recognizing Labour Day in Canada by the Honourable MaryAnn Mihychuk, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour
GATINEAU, QC, Sept. 2, 2016 /CNW/ - In Canada, Labour Day marks the end of summer and back to school – but it is also an important day in the history of Canada. On this day, we recognize the value and importance of workers' rights, health and safety, fair labour laws, and employment equity and diversity, in an evolving and changing workplace.
Today, I would like to highlight the many contributions of working Canadians. As part of our commitment to helping the middle class and those working hard to join it, our government is focussed on supporting and protecting Canadian workers. I firmly believe that every employee has the right to a fair, safe and healthy workplace. This includes protection from harassment and violence and the right to refuse dangerous work.
Canada's labour movement has been essential to building a strong economy that reflects Canadians' values of fairness and inclusivity. For more than a century, organized labour has fought to ensure fair wages, safe working conditions and equitable relations for hard-working Canadians. To this day, Canadian workers and labour organizers continue to build on these significant achievements.
When Canadian workers are in good physical and mental health, they are able to be more efficient, productive, and contribute more fully to our economy and to our society. When they have the right to request flexible work arrangements, they can better manage the demands of paid work and their personal and family responsibilities and in doing so improve their overall work-life balance, reduce workplace stress and health-related symptoms, increase job satisfaction and helping them remain in the labour market.
Our government takes an approach to labour relations that is based on partnership, respect and engagement. Together, we celebrate our shared commitment to keeping Canada's workforce strong and healthy. I would like to wish all Canadians a safe and happy Labour Day among friends and family.
