Events in Toronto February 5-7 2016
Weekend events in Toronto will have you celebrating the Super Bowl in style. Bars and event venues are throwing parties with beer, buffets and big screens to celebrate football's biggest day of the year. If you'd rather catch a concert, Jazz Cartier is playing the Phoenix.
SPORTS Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 7) On the 7th, the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers will go head-to-head in the Super Bowl 50. If you're a sports fan, there are plenty of ways to celebrate in style without jet-setting to an American tailgating party. Whether you want to post up at a old and faithful sports bar or attend a full-blown fiesta, there's plenty to do on Sunday in honour of the big game.
MUSIC Jazz Cartier (Feb. 5) The rising-star Toronto rapper has been cryptically teasing new material and dropping the occasional surprise track here and there as of late. Though not indicative of a full tour, this pit stop at the Phoenix could be more revealing about his impending 2016 release.
10th Annual Bob Marley Birthday Tribute (Feb. 6) Lee's Palace is hosting its annual Bob Marley Birthday Tribute this Saturday and bringing out the House of David Gang with special guests Chronicles Dub Trio ft. Nkrumah & Feeling the One Drop to celebrate. The venue will be accepting canned food donations for Parkdale Community Food Bank, so bring one or two non-perishable items along.
FILM Cineplex's Great Digital Film Festival (Feb. 5-11) If you're a fan of sci-fi, fantasy and cult films, you're in luck. Starting Friday, the Great Digital Film Festival will bring classics to Cineplex theatres across the city. This weekend you'll be able to catch Beverly Hills Cop, Ghostbusters, Labyrinth and more for only $6.99.
SHOPPING Midnight MRKT (Feb. 6) The Midnight MRKT is returning to 2nd Floor Events for its first market of 2016. As per usual, you'll find local, independent retailers and street food vendors selling everything from loose-leaf teas to handcrafted jewellery. To make shopping more interesting there will be plenty of boozy drinks on hand and DJs spinning all night.
FOOD NightWOK Journey (Feb. 5) Celebrate the Year of the Monkey a little early with a Lunar New Year festival at Nest on Friday. Aside from DJs and dancing, you'll get to dine on Asian-inspired dishes like Dan Dan Poutine, Fried Chicken Skewers and Bacon and Shrimp Okonomiyaki.
Feast in the East (Feb. 6) Head to the Anchored Social Club to attend this months' installment of Feast in the East. You'll find all the makings of a good Saturday: music, food, art installations, and plenty of people.
ENTERTAINMENT ROM Friday Night Live Encore: One Love (Feb. 5) Want to kick off your weekend with some dancing, DJs and Bob Marley? The ROM is where it's at. Its tribute to reggae's main man will feature DJ K.I., Feeling the One Drop, DJ Jason Palma and more. You'll also get access to the Water Carry Me Go exhibition and can grab food from some of the city's best trucks.
Butch Femme Salon Time Traveller's Ball (Feb. 5) Head to Buddies in Bad Times on Friday for an all-out time warp. Dress as your fave historical figure or time-traveller and get ready for an all out dance party.
BOWIE Let's Dance Party (Feb. 5) Bowie fans will congregate at Burdock on Friday to pay tribute to the late and great musician. The venue is hosting a cost-free dance party where you can get down to all of your favourite jams - from "Space Oddity" to "Changes". Remember to pregame if your wallet's a little light.
Kuumba (Feb. 5-7) Kuumba, now in its 20th year, will take over the Harbourfront Centre for a weekend-long fest filled with comedy shows, panels, music events and more. You can catch discussion on black youth moderated by Desmond Cole and the Black Like She women in comedy showcase and more free of charge. Queen B vs JT: Battle of the Sexes Video Dance Party (Feb. 6) The Gladstone is hosting the ultimate pop battle of the sexes dance party this Saturday featuring the hits of Beyonce and Justin Timberlake. If you miss the days of "Crazy in Love" and "Señorita" I suggest grabbing tickets ASAP.
DJ Skate Nights: Kizomba, Bachata, Kompa on Ice (Feb. 6) Head to the Harbourfront Centre on the first Saturday of the month for another DJ Skate Night. The music for this week's installment will be brought to you by Deejay NS, DJ Duck and DJ Kafe. You may not be downing shots on the dance floor, but it's much more cost effective and probably just as fun.
