Ontario Promotes North American Energy Alliance in Washington D.C.
March 31, 2026
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Mines, released the following statement in advance of the Canada-United-States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) review, and immediately following the successful completion of a trade mission to the United States, co-hosted with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and Team Canada delegation: “As Canada and the U.S. review CUSMA, Ontario is back on the ground making the case for collaboration not confrontation, as we face a common geopolitical threat in China and its proxies. Ontario joined a cross-section of Canadian business leaders, including nuclear, critical minerals, and energy, to promote our plan to build at scale and move with speed to unlock our mineral wealth. With electricity and mineral demand skyrocketing, we profiled Ontario’s nuclear advantage and vast mineral wealth, reinforcing our position as a trusted democratic partner. In every meeting, including with the U.S. Administration and Congress, we championed the ‘Fortress Am-Can’ strategy – an unstoppable energy alliance that can support affordability, energy security, and jobs on both sides of the border. American leaders took note of Ontario’s global leadership, building large scale nuclear on-time and on-budget, in addition to building the G7’s first Small Modular Reactor. Premier Ford’s plan will help create 150,000 new-new jobs in nuclear energy and add $800 billion to Canada’s economy. We continue to punch above our weight, taking our position that North American supply chains should be strengthened and protected. This visit is made amid a backdrop of China imposing export controls on minerals and rare earths, as they continue to dominate mineral processing, with 90 per cent of U.S. and European rare earths sourced from that regime. This work is laying the foundation for a successful CUSMA review and reinforces one of the most important economic relationships in the world.”
