|Stay Clear, Stay Safe This August Long Weekend|
Evaluate Water Conditions and Be Prepared
TORONTO, Aug. 3, 2018 /CNW/ - Ontario Power Generation (OPG) wants to remind Ontarians to take extreme caution and exercise sound judgement when around water, especially near OPG's hydroelectric generating facilities.
"At OPG your safety is of the utmost importance. We ask that you take great care when enjoying yourselves in and around water this long weekend," said Mike Martelli, OPG President Renewable Generation. "Whether you are boating, swimming or fishing, conditions around our dams and stations can change quickly making them unsafe for recreation."
There have been more than 57 reported drowning deaths in Ontario so far in 2018. While none of these fatalities have been at OPG stations, these deaths call for an emphasis on safety especially for the upcoming Civic Holiday Weekend. This means having life jackets or personal floatation devices available when boating and evaluating water conditions before swimming regardless of your age or ability.
Remember to obey all warning signs, fencing and safety booms when approaching hydroelectric facilities. Water levels near OPG dams and stations can quickly change without notice making them unsafe areas for swimming, boating, or fishing.
OPG recently launched a new water safety campaign with a public service announcement featuring the harrowing tale of Dammy the Beaver. An avid angler, Dammy learns firsthand about the dangers of fishing near hydro dams and generating stations. His message to everyone tempted by the waters in and around such structures is to stay clear, stay safe because your life may be at risk. The PSA will run all summer on major Ontario networks, and is part of a broader multimedia strategy promoting water safety around OPG's dams and hydroelectric generating stations, which includes print and online advertising.
