The Hon. Andrew Scheer, the Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, issues statement for Romania’s National Day
DECEMBER 1, 2019 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada issued the following statement for Romania’s National Day: “Today, Canadians of Romanian descent will join millions of Romanians around the world to celebrate Romania’s National Day. Also known as the Great Union Day today marks the 101st anniversary of Romania’s modern statehood. “The people of Romania have endured centuries of foreign rule, violent conflicts on their soil and more recently, decades of brutal socialist occupation. The determination of the Romanian people to live in a free and democratic society finally materialized following the death of the notorious dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu who led the country into deterioration during his reign. “As NATO allies, our two countries share important democratic values and positive bilateral relations that carry on a long and resilient friendship as active trading partners. Earlier this year, Canada’s Air Task Force-Romania has completed its four-month deployment with NATO’s enhanced Air Policing in Romania. ATF-Romania is an important air component of Operation Reassurance, Canada’s contribution to NATO’s assurance and deterrence measures in Central and Eastern Europe.
“Today, Canada is proud to be home to more than 200,000 Canadians of Romanian heritage who have contributed immensely to our country’s prosperity and cultural fabric. “I would like to congratulate the people of Romania for recently conducting a peaceful and democratic Presidential election. “On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I extend my best wishes to all Canadians celebrating Romania’s National Day!
