Mayor's Special Update - Mississauga

Let's stay in touch!
See what's happening on our social sites

Dear Friends,

As you may have heard on the news lately, the Ontario government is taking a look at Regional Government to see if regions like Peel are running efficiently and effectively, and delivering quality services to residents.

So, what does this mean for Mississauga?

It means Mississauga has an opportunity to change our relationship with the Region of Peel.

We want to hear from you. Please join us for a town hall meeting:

When: Monday, April 8, 2019
Time: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Location: City Council Chambers, 300 City Centre Drive, Mississauga
Note: The proceedings will be streamed live on the City's website, on Twitter and Facebook

We have been part of Peel Region since 1974. Over the last 45 years, Mississauga tax payers have always paid the majority share of funding for regional government. We have run the numbers and they don't add up for Mississauga.

As taxpayers, we are over-contributing $85 million per year to the Region to subsidize Brampton and Caledon.

It's not fair to you. Your tax dollars should be invested in your City. It's time for a change.

Council has approved in principle a resolution that would see Mississauga separate from the Region of Peel. The province would have to approve this request. You can also read my full statement on the review here.

As the 3rd largest city in Ontario and 6th in Canada, Mississauga is more than ready and capable of controlling its own affairs, in the way that many other cities that are not part of a region already do.

Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, London, Guelph, Thunder Bay, and even Dryden, Ontario with a population of 7,700 all have more power than Mississauga to control their own affairs.

We do not need the Region, Brampton or Caledon telling us how to run our city.

We have done our homework, we've had a look at the books, and have come to the conclusion that the Region of Peel is no longer working for Mississauga. You can read our business case, here.

As an independent city, Mississauga could control our future growth and development, reduce confusion for residents, improve service delivery and get rid of waste and duplication between two levels of government.

Please visit the City of Mississauga's website for more information.

I encourage you to submit your comments directly to province until May 21st by visiting ontario.ca/regionalgovernment.

You can also register to present in person to the Province's advisors, here.

I look forward to continuing to work closely with our residents, businesses and the province to determine the best path forward for Mississauga.

Sincerely,

Mayor of Mississauga
